What is an Independent Travel Agent?

As you probably know, I’m Michelle, an independent travel agent with Michelle Davison – Your Holiday Booking. But what is an independent travel agent and why should you use one? Read on to find out…

Basically, an independent travel agent is self-employed, or a small business owner who works in the travel industry

So what does an independent travel agent do?

Independent agents typically work with a variety of travel suppliers to help our clients plan and book travel arrangements. We are able to book with all the large operators such as Jet2, EasyJet, TUI, etc. We’ll also work with those specialising in one or two destinations such as Balkan Holidays, or Olympic Holidays. We also have contacts with villa specialists, long-haul suppliers, theme park holidays, Disney, Lapland breaks, ski breaks, and activity holidays. You name it, we’ll have a way of booking it!

As independent travel agents, we’re often easier to get hold of as we don’t just work 9-5. We’re contactable online, by phone, social media… so you’re not sat waiting for a shop or call centre to open.

We are often affiliated with a larger travel agency or consortium. This provides us with additional resources and support, as well as financial protection, and ABTA and ATOL licenses. I’m affiliated with Midcounties Cooperative and work under their ABTA and ATOL licenses. Anything you book through me has full financial protection.

Using an independent travel agent can be a good way to plan and book your travel arrangements. We can save you time and hassle! As we’re not affiliated with a particular travel company or airline, we can offer a wider range of options and prices from multiple suppliers. We can also provide valuable insights and recommendations based on our personal experience and industry knowledge.

Why work with an independent travel agent?

There are several advantages to working with an independent travel agent…

1.    Convenience. An independent travel agent can handle all the details of your trip. This includes booking flights, hotels, and activities. We’ll also handle any changes or issues that may arise. This can save you a lot of time and hassle compared to trying to do everything yourself. Wait times to speak to operators have massively increased post-Covid. We deal with any changes to itineraries, passengers, etc, so you don’t have to wait!

2.    Cost savings. Independent travel agents have access to a wide range of travel deals and discounts. These may always not be available to the general public. As we work with such a variety of suppliers, we know where the best deals and discounts are. Tour operators send us special deals and offers every day which we can pass on. We can help you find the best prices and value for your money.

3.    Expertise and knowledge. Independent travel agents often have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the travel industry. We can provide valuable insights and recommendations based on our personal experiences and your specific needs and preferences. We’ll create customised travel itineraries based on your specific interests and preferences. We are often able to build a trip from scratch if there’s not a package to meet your needs. If you’ve got a trip in mind and don’t know where to start, an independent agent can help.

4.    Personalised service. Independent travel agents can offer a more personalized service than a large online booking site. We can take the time to get to know you and your travel preferences. We can help you plan an itinerary that meets your specific needs and budget. You can have direct, personal communication with us, and have the opportunity to ask questions and get recommendations in real time. Well almost…we do sleep sometimes too!

5.    Peace of mind. An independent travel agent is there to look out for your interests and to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Booking a holiday is a big financial commitment, and we know you want to have the best time. We want to make sure that your trip goes smoothly and that you can make the most of your precious time off.

How to get the most from working with an independent travel agent

So now you know why you should work with an independent travel agent. How do you get the most out of the experience?

1.    Let us know what you want from your holiday, and any special needs or preferences you have. Provide us with as much information as possible. This will help us tailor our recommendations to your needs, and find something you’re going to truly love.

2.    Tell us your budget… and be honest! We don’t want to know this so we can find a holiday at the top end of your budget. If I find a holiday that is way under budget but meets your requirements, I’ll show you it! Letting us know your budget helps us immediately narrow down our search results. We won’t waste your time sending you ideas that are too expensive. If I can’t find something in your budget, I’ll tell you. I’ll also let you know what you can expect to have to spend! I can also suggest alternatives if you can’t get exactly what you want.

3.    Look for agents who are certified by a professional organisation. Looking for ABTA and ATOL licenses, among others, ensure your booking is protected financially should anything go wrong.

4.    Get everything in writing. Make sure to get a written copy of your itinerary and any important details. I always send everything out immediately via email. The admin team for my consortium also sends out reminders, updates, and tickets when needed.

5.    Stay in touch with your agent throughout the planning process. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or raise any concerns you may have. We’re happy to answer questions and make sure you know what you’re booking before you book!
