My Top Places to Visit in March

A spring scene - pink flowers blooming over green hills

It feels like only yesterday I was putting together my top places to visit in February. But here I am already with March’s list! March is a brilliant time to get away. The Easter holidays usually start sometime in March. The days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, and there’s a bit more warmth in the air. Well, most of the time! Whether you’re looking for a quick city break or a longer family holiday, here are my top places to visit in March.

Japan

The first of my top places to visit in March is somewhere which has been on my travel wish list for a long time! Late March is usually the start of the cherry blossom season in Japan. This is when thousands of visitors flock to see the stunning blossoms in bloom. As Japan tends to be one of those once-in-a-lifetime destinations, I would advise packing as much as possible into your trip!

Sakura, as the cherry blossoms are known, transforms the landscape into a sea of delicate pink and white petals. Cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka burst with colour in their parks, gardens and riversides. Or you can choose to experience the blossoms in some more rural areas such as Mount Yoshino. If you choose to visit one of Japan’s cities, you can enjoy the splashes of cherry blossom contrasted against modern glass-fronted office buildings. Full flowering generally occurs in Tokyo a little earlier than in other areas. This provides a great opportunity to combine multiple cities in one trip. During the blossom season, parks are full with Hanami (blossom-watching parties) under the blooms.

March is also a great time to visit as temperatures start to rise and the warmth of spring comes through. While more Northern regions may still have a hint of winter, southern areas experience milder temperatures. This makes it the perfect time to get out and about and explore some of Japan’s main cities and sights. Wander through historic streets and explore local shrines and temples. While in Japan you have to indulge in some traditional cuisine from steaming bowls of ramen to fresh sushi.

If you do head to one of the Northern regions, March is a great time to experience skiing in Japan. The regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku offer great ski conditions, something the UK market is starting to recognise. Crystal Ski has recently launched ski packages in Japan. Why not spend some time skiing the slopes, then head to one of the main cities to truly experience both sides of Japan?

Madrid

March is a great time to visit Madrid. As soon as the clocks go back, the temperatures rise and stay at an average of 20 degrees. Perfect for exploring the city whilst avoiding the fiery temperatures of the summer months.

One of the highlights of visiting Madrid in March is the city’s celebrations during Semana Santa (Holy Week). This typically falls towards the end of the month. The streets come alive with processions and music, offering an insight into Spanish traditions and culture.

March also tends to be a quieter time to visit Madrid (away from Holy Week). This makes it a great time to explore many of Madrid’s attractions without the summer crowds. Explore the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia National Art Centre, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It’s also a great time to explore some of the outdoor attractions such as the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor. The amazing Retiro Park is great for those warm, sunny days with lakes and parkland to enjoy. On a nice day, you can sit and enjoy some traditional churros overlooking the boating lake.

March also marks the start of outdoor dining season in Madrid. Cafes, restaurants and tapas bars set out their tables on the streets so you can enjoy the atmosphere of the city whilst dining. Enjoy some churros, tapas or a glass of sangria in the warm spring sunshine. Top tip – head to the Mercado San Miguel for tapas. It’s an old fish market redeveloped as a food market enjoyed by tourists and locals. You can buy food to takeaway, or try little tapas dishes, a glass of wine or a beer at many of the stalls too!

Ireland

Next on my list of top places to visit in March has to be Ireland! As the first signs of spring start to appear, the Irish countryside bursts into life. However, one of the main draws to Ireland in March is St Patrick’s Day. From the grand parade in Dublin to one of the smaller gatherings in rural towns, there is plenty of celebrating to be done. Streets are adorned in green, traditional music fills the air and there is plenty of dancing… and Guinness!

If the wild St Patrick’s Day celebrations aren’t your thing, there are still plenty of good reasons to visit Ireland in March. The Irish countryside is painted in lush green hues and colourful blooms. The slightly milder temperatures make it an ideal time to explore some of Ireland’s famous landscapes. From the dramatic cliffs of Moher to the beauty of Connemara. It’s a great time for hiking, cycling, or simply wandering along scenic trails. There are also plenty of ancient castles, quaint villages and history to immerse yourself in.

And of course, there are plenty of cities in Ireland if you fancy a quick break away. Dublin is the obvious choice for history, shopping and nightlife. Away from Dublin, Galway is another great option for a city break. With colourful streets, lively pubs and a great arts scene. Explore medieval streets in the Latin Quarter or take a springtime walk along the Salthill Promenade. Or try Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city. There’s a thriving culinary scene, perfect for foodies. Or use it as a base to get out and explore some of the stunning surrounding landscapes including the Ring of Kerry. And don’t forget to visit Blarney Castle and kiss the Blarney Stone!

Once you’ve had enough exploring or shopping, there are plenty of pubs to get cosy in. And if you get caught on a damp, drizzly day there will be somewhere to enjoy a pint of Guinness and a bowl of a hearty Irish stew to warm up.

Canary Islands

Spring is a fantastic time to visit any of the Canary Islands. The days are getting longer and sunnier, but the peak-season crowds haven’t arrived yet. Daytime temperatures average at around 22-25 degrees, and cooler nights are perfect for leisurely walks along the shore. The climate also makes it a great time to explore some of the islands’ natural wonders. From hiking trails in Tenerife Teide National Park, or visiting the top of Mount Teide. Discovering secluded coves on the rugged coastline of Lanzarote. Exploring some of Gran Canaria’s traditional towns and rugged rock formations. There is also the smaller island of La Palma which is starting to open up to more tourists. For a unique Canaries break, get there whilst it’s still relatively unspoilt!

March also coincides with Carnival season in the Canary Islands, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the festivities. Each island has their own twist on the celebrations with colourful parades, elaborate costumes, lively music and traditional cuisine. One of the most well-known is the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The carnival celebrates local culture with music and colourful décor.

If you’re looking for a more relaxing break, March is an excellent time to unwind on one of the island’s many beaches. Whether it’s lounging on the golden sands of Playa de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, or Playa Blanca in Lanzarote. There are also many hidden coves of La Gomera to explore. The Canaries are also always a fantastic family holiday option. There are plenty of resorts offering water parks, all-inclusive hotels, theme parks, beaches, shopping, apartments and villas. There really is something for everyone across the islands!

Sicily

If Italy is calling you for a March getaway, then the warmest temperatures can be found in Sicily. That’s why it’s the final destination of my top places to visit in March. Whilst heatwaves are rare, you will get 8 hours of sunshine a day and mild spring temperatures. The perfect conditions for exploring some of Sicily’s cities.

One of the main advantages of visiting Sicily in March is the chance to visit many of the main attractions without the summer crowds. Iconic landmarks such as the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and the ancient ruins of Syracuse are much quieter. This allows visitors to immerse themselves in the history of Sicily at their own pace. Nature enthusiasts will also love Sicily at this time of year. The countryside bursts into life with lush greenery and vibrant wildflowers. It’s an ideal time for hiking and cycling through the countryside. You can explore the Madonie and Nebrodi mountains, or take advantage of the stunning coastline.

March also marks the start of Sicily’s festival season with celebrations taking place across the island. From colourful Carnival festivities in towns such as Acrieale to the more solemn religious processions during Holy Week. These events will give visitors an insight into Sicilian traditions. And of course, you can’t visit Sicily without trying some traditional Sicilian cuisine. The lack of crowds makes it easier to get tables in restaurants or visit some of the popular food markets. Spring is a great time for trying some of the island’s best seasonal produce and seafood!
