My Top Places to Visit in February

Sunset viewed through a heart cut out

February is the month of lurrve. It’s also a month when it can be cold and wet in the UK. If you’ve had enough of the UK weather and are looking for a change, there are plenty of options for a February getaway. Of course, there are plenty of beach destinations you can get to in February for a fly and flop in some winter sun. But what if you’re looking for something a little different? Whether you’re looking for a snowy retreat in the mountains, a romantic Valentine’s getaway or some winter sunshine, my five top places to visit in February celebrate sun, fun and romance. So, pack your bags and let’s jet off for a February to remember…

Paris

The first destination in this top places to visit in February article has to be Paris. Paris is one of the first cities many people will think of when they think of a romantic Valentine’s trip. But Paris is equally a fantastic city for a trip with friends or a few days solo.

Paris is considered one of the most romantic cities in the world, and February adds an extra layer of romance. Around Valentine’s Day, the city is adorned with decorations. There are plenty of special events and activities tailored for couples. From romantic strolls along the Seine to enjoying a candlelit dinner, to an extragvent proposal at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Paris is THE place for romance during February.

February is typically considered off-peak for tourists in Paris. This means fewer crowds at popular attractions, shorter lines and more availability at hotels and restaurants. You can make the most of being able to visit the city’s main attractions without the masses of tourists you would find in Spring and Summer. Plus you may be lucky enough to see some of the city’s landmarks adorned with a sprinkling of snow! If you’re a shopping enthusiast, February is great in Paris. Many stores offer winter sales, so you can grab some great deals on designer fashion and accessories. From the high-end boutiques of the Champs-Elysees to the vintage shops in the Marais district, there’s something for every shopping taste in Paris.

Paris is packed with cafes, bistros and restaurants where you can indulge in some of the finest food in the world. These also come in handy on those days that it’s a bit chilly. Imagine popping into a beautiful little case for a flaky croissant and rich hot chocolate. Or cosying up in a French Bistro and enjoying a hearty winter meal such as Beef Bourguignon or Raclette. Yum!

The Maldives

February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives. The Maldives are made up of a chain of 26 atolls, and more than 1000 islands. It is one of the most sought-after destinations in the world, perfect for couples, families and honeymooners.

February is the height of the dry season in the Maldives. The skies are clear and blue, there is minimal rainfall and the days are warm and dry. Average temperatures range from 25-30 degrees so it’s the perfect climate for a warm winter getaway.

It’s also one of the best times of year for snorkelling and diving. The clear waters provide amazing visibility for marine life spotting. If you’re into diving and snorkelling, you’ll have the chance to spot sea turtles, Manta rays, Tiger Sharks, and Whale sharks. Booking guided snorkelling or diving tours will give you the chance to discover some less visited spots. If snorkelling or diving aren’t your thing, but you love the water, then the calm seas are perfect for taking part in other sports. From parasailing and jet skiing to windsurfing and kayaking, there are plenty of options. Many resorts offer complimentary water sports equipment, while others provide rentals.

Ari Atoll is one of the best parts of the Maldives to head to in February. The crystal clear waters are teaming with marine life making it a snorkellers and divers dream. Not your scene? Then relax on the beautiful white sand, letting the Maldivian sun warm your skin. Embrace the opportunity to explore multiple islands through organised boat-hopping tours, or by arranging private boat charters. Each island in the Maldives has its own unique charm from beautiful beaches to cultural landmarks. Perfect to forget those cold, wintry temperatures back home.

The romance of the Maldives make them one of the top places to visit in February

The French Alps

France twice on one list?! Yes, but this is a very different side of France to the capital city, and that’s why it’s the next destination on my list of top places to visit in February. The French Alps are one of the best and most consistent skiing spots in the world. February is an ideal time for skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports in the French Alps. The region boasts numerous world-renowned ski resorts such as Courcheval Chamonix and Val d’sere (which was also featured in my January article). There are slopes suited to all skiing abilities. They all offer excellent (and reliable) snow conditions.

Even if you’re not a huge ski fan, the French Alps are still a beautiful destination in winter. They’re transformed into a winter wonderland with snow-capped peaks, frozen lakes and picturesque alpine villages. It’s a perfect time for photographers and nature enthusiasts to capture the stunning landscapes. There are also plenty of apres-ski activities such as sledging, snowshoeing, ice climbing and ice skating. After a day on the slopes, visitors can unwind in cosy mountain lodges or indulge in delicious French cuisine at one of the many restaurants.

While February is a popular time to visit the French Alps (particularly around the school half-term breaks), it is typically quieter than the Christmas and New Year periods. Visitors can enjoy shorter lift lines and more peaceful surroundings. The French Alps offer the potential for a romantic getaway with its beautiful scenery and cosy accommodation.

Mexico

Mexico was definitely one of the top long-haul destinations from the UK in 2023, and this doesn’t look set to change going into 2024. Although it’s a great year-round destination, February gives visitors the chance to explore culture and adventure, or just relax and enjoy some winter sunshine. With direct flights from most UK airports, it’s a convenient choice for anybody wanting to forget the UK winter!

Compared to the peak tourist seasons, February generally sees fewer crowds. This makes it easier to visit some of the more popular attractions such as the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. The weather in February offers mild temperatures and minimal rainfall so it’s perfect if you choose to fly and flop, or you want to get out and about a bit more. Depending on which area of Mexico you travel to, there are hiking trails, cities to explore and of course, many beaches to relax on. February also marks the start of many festivals and cultural celebrations across Mexico. Many of these events feature elaborate processions, colourful costumes and traditional chances. And of course, the chance to sample some of the best Mexican cuisine.

February marks the start of the peak whale-watching season in Mexico, particularly along the Pacific Coast. If you’re staying on the Pacific Coast, you may have the opportunity to spot humpback whales as they migrate to the warmer waters to give birth. Staying in destinations such as Baja California Sur and Puerto Vallarta offers the best whale-watching experiences where you can see them in their natural habitat. If you are going to head off on any whale-watching experiences, do your research, and check the company you are planning to use is ethical. Operators should remain a respectful distance from the whales and not affect their natural behaviours.

Venice

My final choice on my list of top places to visit in February is Venice. Maybe not an obvious choice, but there are two sides to February in Venice. On the one hand, February in Venice is a quiet time to visit and explore all of the main sights the city has to offer. But February is also Carnival month when the streets come alive and are wild and busy.

Heading to Venice during Carnival is not for you if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Although when is Venice ever truly quiet anyway? Being in Venice during the carnival transports you to another world. During February there are free and ticketed events throughout the city, ranging from concerts and operas to acrobatic performances. There are also daily costume shows and extravagant balls. Get into the spirit of Venice Carnival by dressing up in elaborate costumes and masks. These are available to hire throughout the city, although prices will be steep. If you have an old Baroque gown or fancy mask lying around gathering dust, take it with you!

If carnival doesn’t sound like your thing, then visiting during February outside of the Carnival period still makes for a romantic getaway. Visiting in February means quieter streets, soft lighting and romantic mists over the canals. Whether you’re taking a gondola ride through the waterways, or enjoying a candlelit dinner, Venice in February can be very romantic. Although February days are chilly, it’s generally milder than December and January. You’ll likely encounter crisp, cool weather but with fewer chances of extreme cold or snow. The weather can be perfect for leisurely strolls along the canal, or enjoying a candlelit dinner in a cosy restaurant. The quieter period will also make it easier to pick up restaurant reservations and give you more choice of hotel availability.
