Top places to visit in September…

A beautiful autumnal lake scene. An idea of a place to visit in September

It’s September – the long, hot (?!?) summer season is behind us, and Autumn is knocking on our doors. For those of us with children, it’s back to school, back to routine and trying to remember which after-school club is on which day. For those without kids (or with understanding schools!), September is a fantastic time to get away. Temperatures are dropping – although there is still plenty of sunshine to be found. Crowds are finally thinning out, and prices are tumbling after the summer holiday peak. Here’s my top 5 picks for places to visit in September:

The Greek Islands

Number one on my list of places to visit in September would of course be the Greek Islands. Now is a fantastic time to visit those super popular Greek islands which are full of celebrities, influencers and families vying for those Insta-worthy shots in the summer months. September is the time when crowds start to die down. So if you want to spot one of those iconic sunsets, or grab a table at that Taverna you’ve been lusting over, now is the time to do it. You can enjoy the most popular beaches, attractions and restaurants with more space and fewer crowds.

The fiery temperatures of July and August are starting to cool down, but the days are still long and warm. It’s perfectly possible to spend a day by the pool or on a beach topping up your tan. The slightly cooler temperatures also mean it’s a great time to get out and explore a little bit more. Mooch around the old towns on the islands, visit historical monuments and pack in as much as you like each day.

Whilst days are long and warm, the evenings are a little cooler. This makes it ideal for a beachfront stroll, and enjoying a sea front nightcap. And of course means you have more chance of sleeping at night. If you’re anything like me, trying to sleep in the height of summer can be a nightmare. Whilst the weather might be cooling slightly, the seas are still warm. The temperatures are perfect for a quick dip or a snorkelling session.

Many Greek Islands host festivals and cultural events in September. These include music festivals, religious ceremonies and local fairs. There’s always something going on, and you get to see a slice of authentic Greek culture. With the peak season over, prices are definitely more affordable than trying to travel in July or August. There are often plenty of last-minute deals around. Or book in advance and take advantage of paying your holiday off well before you get there! Try visiting Corfu, Rhodes, Mykonos or Santorini. Or why not look into an island-hopping adventure if choosing just one island is too hard!

The Amalfi Coast

We’ve all seen those beautiful images of lemon groves, azure blue seas and colourful villas lining the coastline of Italy. But what the images don’t often show are the jostling crowds fighting for position to get the perfect holiday snapshot. I’ve seen quite a few people on Instagram complaining just how packed the Amalfi Coast gets in summer. So again, September is the ideal time to visit.

Like most places in the Mediterranean, the days are still long and sunny. This makes them perfect for exploring or chilling in your favourite waterfront bar with an Aperol Spritz. It’s still great weather for enjoying the local beaches, outdoor activities and coastal towns without feeling overwhelming. Visibility along the coast tends to be better in September. You get to take full advantage of the amazing views. Hopping round the different bays is so much easier without the crowds. Whether that’s by road or by boat, you get to pack more into your days. There are lots of hiking trails around the coast such as the Path of the Gods. The cooler temperatures mean it’s the perfect time to explore these trails. You’ll also have a better chance of booking that hotel you’ve had your eye on, or getting a table in that restaurant you fancy trying.

I would say avoid some of the larger Italian cities in September as these still tend to be quite busy. Although September is probably the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast, it is still popular. You may need to book to dine in certain popular restaurants. Visit the namesake town of Amalfi, the picturesque Positano, or the lesser-known coastal towns of Minori and Maiori. Or soak up the sun on the beautiful Marina Piccolais beach which will be much quieter in September.

New York City

I’m slightly worried I’ve peaked too early including New York on my first ever list! I mean personally, I don’t think there’s a bad month to visit New York!  If you’re not quite as New York obsessed as I am, it’s still one of the top places to visit in September. The city is starting to come back to life after the summer season. Most New Yorkers decamp to the Hamptons or other places to get out of the sticky city heat. The air is fresher and the city is gearing up for the ‘Fall’ season.

The weather is generally pretty settled and warm, meaning it’s the perfect time to get outdoors. If you’re trying to get your daily steps in, then New York City is actually fairly easy to get around on foot. You don’t miss any sights (and will often stumble on something cool and unexpected tucked down a street). It’s a great time for walking, cycling and picnicking in Central Park. The leaves are just starting to turn and show their autumn colours which makes for some pretty beautiful displays. If the weather does take a turn, you can’t go wrong whiling away some time in the Strand bookshop! Treat yourself to a new book and find a cosy café to snuggle up in.

September is also when there are a lot of events happening in New York. Think New York Fashion Week, film festivals and arts exhibitions. So if art and culture is your thing then this is definitely the time for you to visit! September is also a great time for shopping with lots of back-to-school sales. Grab a bargain but keep an eye on that luggage allowance!!!

Austria

September falls between the peak summer tourist season and the ski season so is a much quieter time to visit. Due to reduced demand, prices drop significantly and there are usually some decent deals available. This makes your getaway much more budget friendly. Austria in September sees the Alpine forests turn to shades of gold, red and orange, making for some very picturesque hiking and sightseeing.

If something a bit more action packed is your thing, then now is a great time to head to Austria. Take part in a a hiking expedition in the Austrian Alps. Enjoy a bike ride along some of the many trails, or try water sports on some of the country’s beautiful lakes. Many of the countryside resorts still offer kids clubs and entertainment during September. If a family holiday is on the cards, there’ll be something for everyone.

Austrian cities such as Vienna and Innsbruck are great to explore in September when the summer heat has gone. You can explore historic sites, and enjoy outdoor cafes without the crowds or oppressive heat you find in peak summer. There are also many cultural events to get involved in such as the Vienna International Film Festival. And if food and drink are your thing, then September is harvest month. Harvest festivals take place across the country allowing you to get involved in local life and enjoy regional food. September is also grape harvest month. If you love your wine, it’s a great time to explore the country’s wine regions, try wine tasting or a vineyard tour. Sign me up!!!

Visiting Vienna or Salzburg for a city break. Innsbruck and the Alpine regions for outdoor enthusiasts. And the Wachau Valley for wine tasting.

The Cotswolds

The final destination on my list of places to visit in September would be The Cotswolds. Of course, The Cotswolds are beautiful at any time of year, but autumn can be extra beautiful. The weather in September is generally mild with pleasant temperatures and cooler evenings. It’s the perfect weather for getting out and exploring the UK countryside and picturesque villages, or enjoy some hiking or biking. The Cotswolds are known for stunning countryside and rolling hills. In September as the colours of the leaves start to change, it creates a beautiful autumnal backdrop.

September is much quieter in the Cotswolds as the main tourist season is over. You can really appreciate the tranquillity and beauty of the little villages as well as the surrounding countryside. With less visitors, you’ll find more choice of accommodation. Of course, the prices will be much lower than peak summer season. This means you’ll save a little more to spend in the local pubs and restaurants. September is also harvest season. Many of the local restaurants will be serving up food grown and harvested locally. A real treat if you’re interested in eating seasonally. The Cotswolds is also home to many cosy pubs. These are perfect for whiling away those cooler evenings – or ducking into to hide from a sudden rain shower. Let’s face it, we get plenty of those in the UK!

Visit Bourton-on-the-Water known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ due it’s many waterways and bridges. Try Burford known as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. Cirencester is the largest town in the Cotswolds. And Tetbury is known for its antique shops and historic market house. There are of course many more options.

There are of course, many more places to visit in September which are perfect for an Autumn getaway. Beach holidays are perfect for those who want warmth and sunshine without the fire of summer. Those looking for more active holidays with activities and sightseeing can also enjoy these activities in more bearable temperatures. For those of us who prefer our holiday destinations less crowded (I’m definitely in this camp), September waves goodbye to busy summer crowds. It also allows you to explore a destination with a slightly more tranquil pace of life.
