Cruise Lines – Your A-Z Guide

Why do you need an A-Z of Cruise Lines? If you’ve never been on a cruise before, it can be tricky to choose the cruise line for you. There are so many cruise companies who offer a range of ship facilities and routes. I thought it would be helpful to put together a guide to come of the more well-known cruise lines. This isn’t an exhaustive list. I could dedicate a whole website to that and you’d need about 4 hours to read it – but it is a very brief whistle-stop tour. Grab a drink, get comfy and prepare to learn a bit more about some of the cruise options available.


Ambassador Cruise Lines

Ambassador is Britain’s premium no-fly cruise line, sailing from 8 regional UK ports. They mostly attract adults, however it is also possible to enjoy a multigenerational cruise with your whole family. Ambassador currently have two ships in their fleet. The Ambience set sail in 2022, and the Ambition went into service in 2023. Their ships offer a higher space-to-guest ratio than many other similar-sized ships which makes cruising feel more relaxed.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival were founded in 1972, they’re known for providing exceptional cruise holidays, catering to a diverse range of travellers. Cunard Cruise Lines

Cunard was founded in 1839 by Samuel Cunard, and have played a significant role in the development of transatlantic travel and luxury cruising. They offer cruises spanning the length and breadth of the globe, lasting from 3 nights to 3 months. Their ships offer luxury accommodation, incredible restaurants and a wealth of evening and daytime activities. There are currently 4 ships in their fleet, including the new Queen Anne which is due to set sail in 2024.

You can’t think of family cruising without thinking Disney! Disney Cruises are known for family-friendly luxury, character meet and greets, themed kids clubs, and Disney storytelling, combined with the excitement of ocean travel. They recently announced they are starting cruises out of Southampton again. There are 6 ships in the Disney fleet, all of which have different facilities on board for the perfect family holiday.

Marella Cruises

Marella Cruises started life as Tui Cruises in the 1960s. All-inclusive comes as standard with Marella, so all of your food, drinks, gratuities and entertainment are included. Their shorter cruises usually only have one day at sea helping you maximise the destinations you can explore. They also offer many cruise and stay options in destinations such as Corfu, Palma and Jamaica.  Marella currently have 5 ships in their fleet including an adults-only ship, the Marella Explorer 2.

MSC Cruises

MSC were founded in 1970 and are the world’s third-largest cruise brand. They are probably the cruise company I know most about, and are the only company I have actually cruised with. MSC are working hard to become the most sustainable cruise company, promoting responsible travel and reducing the environmental impact of their cruises. They use initiatives such as cutting plastic use, and preventing pollution. Their new ships are LNG powered which reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by up to 20%. MSC currently have 23 ships in their fleet including two new ones, MSC Euribia and MSC World America.

They’re super colourful and instantly recognisable. There are currently 28 ships in their fleet, their award-winning Oasis Class ships include first-of-their-kind attractions such as the tallest slide at sea.

Silversea’s small luxury ships are perfect if you’re looking to indulge and discover new destinations. All ships feature ocean-view suites with butler service, and most include private balconies too. With Silversea, all-inclusive comes as standard. There are 13 ships in the Silversea fleet ranging in size from 51 to 364 suites, so there will be a ship size to suit your preference.

Virgin Voyages were founded by Sir Richard Branson in 2020, bringing Virgin’s trademark style and sense of adventure to the seas. Their cruises cater exclusively for adults, they are relaxed and flexible, giving you the chance to disconnect from routine and reconnect with yourself. Currently there are 4 ships in their fleet, all of which have their own home port and cruise different parts of the world.

So there you have it. A very brief (but long) A-Z of Cruise Lines. I haven’t touched on river or small ship cruising as that is a whole new ball game, with its own long list of cruise lines! I may do an article about it at some point – after I’ve had a lie down and a rest from this one!
